To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we’re handing over to some of our apprentices so they can share their experiences in their own words, and today we hear from Ben Gwilliam-Cook – Level 6 Building Surveying (Portsmouth) commencingYear 2
What made you choose your career?
I have always had a strong interest in the construction industry however, I did not wish to work on site on a full-time basis. Initially, I was undecided between pursuing a career as a Building Surveyor or a Quantity Surveyor. Kendall Kingscott provided me with the opportunity to gain experience in both fields, which allowed me to make my decision. Ultimately, I found that Building Surveying was best suited to my skills and interests.
What made you choose an apprenticeship?
The apprenticeship route was the most suitable option for me, as I was keen to enter the working environment as early as possible. This pathway has enabled me to gain practical experience while simultaneously working towards my degree and progressing towards becoming a Chartered Building Surveyor.
What attracted you to KK?
Kendall Kingscott particularly appealed to me due to the wide range of projects undertaken, the support that they offered throughout my studies, as well as the company’s high professional standards.
What does your role involve?
Since joining Kendall Kingscott in 2023 as an Apprentice Building Surveyor, I have undertaken a variety of responsibilities. These include carrying out surveys and writing follow up reports, supporting colleagues on larger projects, and leading smaller projects independently from initial brief through to handover. My role typically involves working on projects as part of a team supporting as Contract Administrator, Project Manager, and Quantity Surveyor.
What do you enjoy most about doing an apprenticeship?
I enjoy having the opportunity to gain both office based and on-site experience while completing my degree. In addition, the ability to earn a salary while studying is a significant benefit.
What does your apprenticeship involve and what qualification will you have at the end of it?
I am completing the Chartered Building Surveying Degree Apprenticeship, which will lead to qualification as a Chartered Building Surveyor.
What keeps you busy outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy the gym, playing golf and football, and the occasional trip to the pub!
