International Human Resources Day: A Spotlight on Courtney Cosgrove

International Human Resources Day – An Interview with Courtney Cosgrove.
International Human Resources Day is recognised as a day to commemorate the invaluable contributions and dedication of HR professionals in nurturing business operations and overseeing the entire employee lifecycle. Courtney Cosgrove joined Kendall Kingscott in October 2022 from a legal HR background, and she immediately appreciated the welcoming atmosphere in the team. She settled in quickly and has enjoyed growing in her role ever since!
In honour of Human Resources Day, we engaged in a conversation with Courtney to delve into her journey at KK, her recent Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Level 5 qualification, and how she continues to grow in her profession.
What led you to want to pursue your CIPD qualifications?
"My interest in HR began after a conversation with a family friend. At the time, most HR roles required either a CIPD Level 3 qualification or relevant experience, neither of which I possessed. Consequently, I decided to self-fund and complete my Level 3, which led to my first HR role in 2019. I've genuinely enjoyed learning and growing in the field ever since! As I continue to develop my expertise, I am becoming increasingly involved in projects alongside Lin, moving beyond the more 'standard' administrative tasks."
How did you find balancing work and studies while working towards your Level 5?
"I completed my CIPD Level 5 during the final months of my pregnancy and maternity leave, which was admittedly daunting, considering it was my first child, and the Level 5 course can be quite demanding. Finding time to study was challenging at times, but it also provided a wonderful way to keep my mind academically engaged while I was away from work. I am now awaiting the final marks and certification."
How did KK support you through the process?
"During my initial interview, I expressed my interest in pursuing the CIPD Level 5 certification, particularly because I was eager to expand my knowledge in areas such as employment law, which the course covers in greater depth. Kendall Kingscott was incredibly supportive and generously funded the course for me. Lin, who has completed the Level 5 herself, has been an invaluable resource, offering insightful advice and helping me to refine my ideas.
Is there a particular individual who has supported you through lifelong learning throughout your career at KK?
"Lin has been wonderful—she possesses the experience, the qualifications, and a great deal of patience as well!"
What do you like to do in your free time?
"I'm very family-oriented and fortunate to have many family members living nearby, so we often spend time together—whether it's BBQs, dinners, or the occasional weekend getaway. I also enjoy catching up with friends over a cocktail (or two!), and having a sunny holiday to look forward to always keeps me happy!"
"As the business expanded, it became clear that more HR support was required. I’ll admit, I was initially hesitant to share my responsibilities, but Courtney has exceeded all expectations. Her broad skillset and fresh outlook, combined with her natural ability to connect with people, have been invaluable. I’m incredibly proud of her for completing her Level 5 qualification and feel truly fortunate to have her as a key member of our HR team."
