Marwell Zoo - New Tropical House
- Client: HH Drew
- Location: Marwell Zoo, Winchester
- Role: Contractor's Architect
We were part of the construction team for this design & build contract for a new tropical house and energy centre at Marwell Zoo, Winchester.
The build comprised approximately 1,300m2 of exhibit and back-of-house support accommodation and is home to a range of plants and animal species, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
We were appointed at RIBA stage 4 to advance further the existing designs, which had been developed to take advantage of the site contours and to create an interesting internal route through the exhibit, with an elongated S-shaped plan designed to provide an elevated entry / low-level exit from the structure. The exhibition space is covered with ETFE transparent pillows on a structural steel frame with a concrete spine wall between it and the back of house accommodation.
