International Women's Day

International Women's Day

To celebrate International Women's Day, we're handing over to one of our female employees to say things in her own words. Anna Wallace is an Undergraduate Building Surveyor currently studying an MSc in Building Surveying at the University of the West of England.

"International Women’s Day to me, is about recognising the women already making an impact in the sector, while showing younger girls that there is space for them here also. Representation and education shape ambition, and by increasing visibility I believe the preconception that it is primarily a male-industry will be challenged.

"I feel really fortunate to work alongside people who actively support and encourage diversity within the profession.

"I have always had an interest in the built environment but didn’t know where I could fit into the industry. As a young girl especially, I perceived the construction industry to be dominated by men performing heavy manual labour, and so it wasn’t until mid-way through my undergraduate degree that I had heard of a Building Surveyor. I enjoy problem-solving and understanding how things work, and after doing more research into the role I realised it embodies everything I am passionate about. I enrolled on a conversion master’s degree in building surveying to gain more knowledge and the RICS accredited degree I would need to eventually become chartered.

"Now working in industry part-time alongside my masters, every day is different and I enjoy the variety of site inspections, report writing, meeting clients and working with other professionals. I can combine technical knowledge with analytical thinking, all while having a real-world impact."
