Celebrating Apprenticeship Week: Ben Borkowski

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we’re handing over to some of our apprentices so they can share their experiences in their own words, and today we hear from Ben Borkowski – Level 6 Building Surveying (UBE) commencing Year 4.

What made you choose your career?

I have family in the construction industry, as both surveyors and on the business development side, so I was fortunate to have an insight into the roles and opportunities available to me. I chose surveying due to the broad nature of the role and the ability to pivot from one area to another under one set of qualifications, the flexibility and mixture of work available was a big factor.

What made you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship because it is a vocational route and I have always preferred gaining practical experience while also learning the theory. It provides a clear connection between what you're learning and what you are doing day to day. Additionally, the ability to gain a degree without incurring any university debt and gain 4-5 years of industry experience while you do it is extremely valuable.

What attracted you to KK?

KK’s reputation for excellent training and development was the biggest factor when applying for my degree apprenticeship. During my interview I was told how the director of the Exeter office had started his journey doing work experience and then joined as a trainee, so from the outset there was clear evidence of the progression opportunities. Also, the representatives of KK I met during my interviews where all incredibly welcoming and it was evident that there was a good office culture.

What does your role involve?

My role involves a variety of tasks, which is what makes it so engaging! My day to day work includes anything from visiting a live construction site to review progress or meeting with contractors and clients, to writing reports setting out the feasibility of a potential new project. I also get involved with the tendering process, writing specifications for builder’s work, and liaising with other consultants to arrange and produce survey information.

What do you enjoy most about doing an apprenticeship?

The best thing about doing an apprenticeship is the early introduction to industry practises and seeing how organisations operate. When I complete my degree, I will already have 4 years of experience working in the industry and be in a strong position to further my career.

What does your apprenticeship involve and what qualification will you have at the end of it?

My Apprenticeship involves an 80-20 split between work and study, with 4 years' worth of university modules alongside your working hours. While it can be busy at times with a day job and study to complete, it teaches you to have good timemanagement. Once complete and if I pass my degree, I will gain a Degree in Building Surveying, BSc (Hons) and be on the pathway to gain MRICS status if I were to sit my APC.

What keeps you busy outside of work?

When I'm not studying… I am an avid tech enthusiast and enjoy working on my PC, learning about new technology/software, and also gaming. I also follow Formula 1 very closely and enjoy running and going to the gym.
