Celebrating Apprenticeship Week: Corbin Brown
Celebrating Apprenticeship Week: Corbin Brown
To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we’re handing over to some of our apprentices so they can share their experiences in their own words, and today we hear from Corbin Brown – Level 6 Building Surveying (UBE) commencingYear 4
What made you choose your career?
I’ve always been interested in the construction industry, especially in how buildings are designed, created, and evolve. My initial ambition was to go into architecture because I was fascinated by the creative side of shaping spaces. But as I learned more about the wider built environment, I became increasingly interested in the technical and problem-solvingsolving aspects of how buildings function in the real world. That’s what led me to building surveying. It brings together the parts of the industry I enjoy most.
What made you choose an apprenticeship?
I chose a Degree Apprenticeship in Building Surveying because it offered the ideal balance between academic learning and industry experience. Studying allows me to work towards a degree while applying everything I learn to live projects. For me, this hands-on approach is the most effective way to build confidence, develop practical skills, and understand how the surveying profession works on approach is the most effective way to build confidence, develop practical skills, and understand how the surveying profession works daytoday. It also allows me to gain a degree and earn a salary, without taking on university debt.
What attracted you to KK?
One of the main things that attracted me to Kendall Kingscott was the variety of projects and clients the company works with. The opportunity to gain experience across different sectors, building types, and project scales really appealed to me, especially at the early stage of my career.
What does your role involve?
I’m involved in a wide range of technical and professional surveying tasks that help support the delivery of projects from concept through to completion. My work includes carrying out site inspections, capturing detailed building information, identifying defects, and preparing accurate reports.
What do you enjoy most about doing an apprenticeship?
What I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is the integration of structured learning with real project experience. Studying while working on live projects allows me to immediately apply theory to practice, whether that’s building pathology, surveying techniques, or contract administration. This learning accelerates my development, builds confidence, and makes theoretical knowledge genuinely meaningful.
What does your apprenticeship involve and what qualification will you have at the end of it?
My apprenticeship combines work with structured academic study through UCEM’s BSc (Hons) Building Surveying degree. The programme is designed to develop both the technical knowledge and practical experience needed for a career in the surveying profession.
What keeps you busy outside of work?
Outside of work, I like to keep fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I also value quality time with my family, whether that’s getting outdoors, relaxing together, or making the most of weekends.
